Take an introductory look at the most used medical codes—ICD (9 and 10), CPT, and HCPCS. Discuss the history and purpose of each code system and decipher the structure. Dive into how medical codes can be used in the supplemental health market (automatic claims adjudication, fraud identification, pricing), as well as common pitfalls encountered when using medical coding. By attending this session, you will have a basic understanding of the different types of medical codes, their actuarial applications, and common pitfalls.

Description: In the past months, as COVID-19 has forced the reduced activity in the U.S. economy there has been some very substantial, but varied effects on the U.S. healthcare system. There is a lot of potential for confusion amongst providers and patients with regards to decisions related to which services ought to be rendered and which ought to be deferred. Two specific agencies – the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), and the American College of Surgeons (ACS) have put together some guidance to add more clarity towards what types of services should be provided and what types ought to be deferred. In addition, this paper includes a discussion on what types of services are most likely to be deferred, and which ones will accrue pent-up demand to be released when many of the deferred services become available again.

Description: This is the Introductory Study Note for the Society of Actuaries Financial Economic Theory and Engineering examination for Spring 2012 that will be given on Thursday, April 26th, from 8:30 a.m. - 11:45 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. – 4:45 p.m.

Description: The Study was designed to elicit reasons behind the participants’ judgments about the future course of the four variables. In the first round participants were asked to provide judgments about the value of the four variables in 2024 and the reasons behind their judgments. The four variables were 1. Increase in CPI, 2. 10 Year Treasury Yield, 3. S&P500 Total Rate of Return, and 4.Corporate Baa yield. In addition, they were asked to list future developments that could cause historical trends in the variables to change. Finally they were asked to express their views on how the judgmental process employed in this study might influence the use and interpretation of traditional actuarial e.g., stochastic, deterministic estimation processes or to aid in planning. The data were collated between rounds and in the second Round, the responses of the group were provided to the participants.
