Description: Under the new reporting regimes actuaries have the opportunity to become leaders for all aspects of cash flows and related insights, rather than just the reserve change line on the income statement, to help educate the organization and informed business decisions. This session will provide practical examples and scenarios where actuaries take on leadership roles to drive reporting compliance and organizational changes; as well as provide an opportunity to discuss what didn’t work as well when it came to deploying new technologies to the valuation and pricing teams.

Description: Certain valuation assumptions are difficult to set with a high degree of accuracy, whether because the underlying experience is in different economic or interest rate environments, in addition to other reasons. Examples include assumptions for long-term care insurance, annuity options, lapsation and premium persistency on ULSG. This session will share how the actuary can use predictive analytics to augment the assumption-setting process. Some of the benefits to the actuary (along with the company and the regulator) include more accurate assumptions with lower margins for adverse deviations. Of possible interest as well is that applications go beyond valuation and include acquisitions, reinsurance and pricing.

Description: The presenters will provide an update on discount rates developed from the expected return on assets used in going concern pension funding. They will include recent research on discount rates being used for U.S. public sector plans, U.S. Multiple Employer Pension Plans, and Ontario and British Columbia plans. A discussion of the emerging regulatory framework in Canada and the U.S. and changes to ASOP 4 and 27 will also be covered. Components of discount rates such as expenses and margins (PfADs) will also be covered.

This session builds on the first session in this series by considering how medical advances might influence policyholders, while also considering how agents/brokers, product design, and the economy can also be influencers. Weigh whether and to what extent behavioral uncertainties have been adequately integrated into the firms' assessments of business performance, both past and future. The presenters will also highlight activities being undertaken by firms to influence behaviors, in part building on the second session in this series by considering these activities through a regulatory lens. Description: Healthcare cost is increasing at 9.3% in Asia in 2017 and health insurance cost will eventually catch up, making healthcare unaffordable to aging populations. Inefficiency in healthcare system is a contributing factor. In this session, use cases on how AI is impacting the health insurance operations on 3 core challenges. Document processing: A lot of documents are generated in the healthcare ecosystem, medical reports, diagnosis, invoices etc. Currently most of the documents are still reviewed manually and rely heavily on users’ judgement. Customer engagement: Customers are generally under distress and feel rejected during the claim process. It is due to the time and process needed to get the information they look for, the gap between the sales and claims process, and the reimbursement amount. Claim settlements: Claim adjudication is a technical process that review the disease, treatment and policy coverage. The process is specific to disease and difficult to be generalized. Thus, the process is far from consistent and invites fraud, abuse and wastage in this area.
