Description: As part of its ongoing effort to provide useful information on COVID-19, the Society of Actuaries issued a brief qualitative survey to its Retirement Section members to gain insight as to how COVID-19 is impacting the retirement programs and organizations they support, and also how it is impacting their work. The survey results are intended to help members compare their thinking and future expectations of COVID-19 with their peers, as well as inform future research efforts.

Description: This literature review provides insights on emerging technologies that interact with the actuarial profession within the space of microinsurance for the purpose of establishing a frame of reference for actuaries to use in their work. Furthermore, it intends to spark readers’ interest in, and create a vision for, how microinsurance and its associated technologies may impact the actuarial industry in the future.

Description: This paper suggests the reasons why an actuary should play a role in the over-all investment policy of a 'new' company, defined as less than 5 years old, and what some of those duties should be. The paper gives an overview of the types of investments available to an insurance company and the considerations for each relative to a new company.

Description: The COVID-19 pandemic infection has greatly affected the economy, resulting in volatile market conditions. Because market conditions greatly impact the value of insurance company’s assets and liabilities, the fourth survey in this series focused on best practices around asset and liability management (ALM). The survey was directed at actuaries, investment managers and risk managers directly involved in assessing the impact of recent events on ALM. Responses to the survey were collected between April 22-28, 2020. Thirty-two companies responded to the survey.

Description: The Society of Actuaries (SOA) sought to investigate methodologies and characteristics associated with actuarial innovation, aiming to expand the industry’s capabilities for creativity. The SOA engaged Milliman to conduct in-depth interviews and focus groups with select actuaries who have demonstrated innovative skills, in order to derive key behaviors and characteristics that encourage innovation.

The paper goes on to suggest how these pitfalls might be avoided in the interests of providing future actuaries with an opportunity to develop the attributes they will need for their professional careers.
