Description: In 2005, the Life and Health Actuarial Task Force [LHATF] of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners [NAIC] requested that the actuarial professional bodies develop mortality tables for reserving that would better reflect the actual mortality of companies for the mortality of preferred risks underwritten in the marketplace today. Setting different levels of valuation mortality appropriate for preferred risks would largely address issues of reserve redundancy due to the assumption of mortality. This interim report covers the Data Validation, Underwriting Criteria, and Experience Analysis portions of this project.

Description: This study covers a five-calendar year period, years 2011-2015. Death claims incurred during this five-year period and paid by the data collection date were included. The data was primarily collected during the summer and fall of 2017, which would allow a minimum of 18 months following date of death for a claim to be paid. The study was limited to single premium credit life insurance.

Description: Based on work performed by Bob Howard, a former member of RPEC, the SOA developed a spreadsheet-based program that allows users to create a customized mortality improvement scale using the RPEC_2014 model. The RPEC_O2_v2018 model found here utilizes the same projection methodology underpinning the RPEC_2014 model except that the historical rates have been developed using “order-2” Whittaker-Henderson graduation rather than “order-3”.

Description: This paper is from Transactions of Society of Actuaries 1955 Volume 7, Number 17. The authors note that ‘mortality experiences of large closed groups carried through until the termination of all the lives are not often available,’ but that they provide ‘relatively reliable mortality experience at the very advanced ages.’ This paper presents the results of the mortality study of probably the only such closed group to date in the United States, the pension roll of Union Civil War veterans.
