Description: This article discusses the agenda of the Retirement Needs Framework Conference to be held on Dec. 10-11, 1998 in Orlando, FL. The conference is intended for employee benefit managers and consultants, policy analysts, financial planners, product designers at insurers, mutual funds and banks offering products to help finance retirement, academics, and any professional interested in the issues surrounding retirement costs.

Description: The Society of Actuaries SOA developed the ‘Risks and Process of Retirement Survey Report’ to help identify retirement risks and raise awareness of approaches to manage those risks. The survey analyzes the leading retirement risks of men and women, ages 45 to 80, who are either retired or still in the workforce. This document provides a summary of the results and provides information on how to obtain the Survey Report’s summary or a full report.

Description: The 2020 ERISA Advisory Council of the Department of Labor had a project on Considerations for Recognizing and Addressing Participants with Diminished Capacity. I delivered testimony to the ERSIA Advisory Council on this topic in September 2020. This article summarizes some key points from the testimony and also offers ideas for how employers can help employees and retirees deal with these issues. There are two different audiences that employers deal with as a result of diminished capacity – the individuals whose capacity is diminished, and those who help them.

Description: With the decline in traditional defined benefit plans, cutbacks in Social Security already legislated, and further ones possibly needed to maintain solvency, retirees increasingly must rely on their own ability to manage their retirement income. Relatively few retirees purchase annuities, leaving them with investment and distribution decisions concerning their accumulated savings. Increasing life expectancy and improved health at older ages raise the issue of whether people should consider postponing retirement as a way of assuring adequate resources during retirement. During retirement, they face complex issues concerning how to manage various risks. Increasingly, people planning for retirement have access to financial planning software, much of it available over the internet for free. This study, sponsored by the Society of Actuaries and the Actuarial Foundation, assesses the extent to which the retirement planning programs analyzed help users understand post-retirement risks.

Description: This is the Questionnaire used for the research study, 'Will Retirement Assets Last a Lifetime?'. That study, sponsored by the Society of Actuaries Committee on Post Retirement Needs and Risks, LIMRA, and the International Foundation for Retirement Education, surveyed approximately 1,500 retirees with $100,000 or more of investable financial assets. The survey questions explored how retirees make decisions about investing their assets and purchasing financial products

Description: This article summarizes a roundtable discussion moderated by Anna Rappaport. The purpose of the roundtable was to discuss a model of personal investing known as the Life–Cycle Model of Investing and Saving. This model is concerned with how individuals can find ways to smooth their consumption so that they have a roughly similar standard of living across different periods of time.
