Description: The declaration of the COVID-19 public health emergency in the US has led to increased Medicaid membership, which has affected the aggregate acuity of these populations. This session will cover considerations in how this change in acuity could be accounted for in Medicaid rate development. Additionally, the session will provide updates on current issues in Medicare payment policy, including Medicare Advantage and new payment models. Dr. Boonen’s research interests include risk sharing, capital allocation, applications of game theory in insurance, and longevity risk modeling. Open to scholars around the world, this award recognizes individuals for their exceptional scientific contributions in actuarial science at the early stages of their academic career.

Description: For actuaries, the greatest barrier to advancement into the highest levels of insurance and consulting organizations is the lack of strong leadership and management skills. Studies show that while professionals typically take on management responsibilities within 10 years after starting their careers, they may not receive any formal training for 5-10 years after that. This puts them at a great disadvantage in managing their teams, in the short run, and becoming high-level leaders, in the long run.
