The database includes more than 171,000 claims of $25,000 or more, representing over $10 billion in total charges. Fields include diagnosis 3digit ICD-9 code, type of coverage HMO, PPO, Indemnity, etc., claimant status employee or dependent, and charges split into hospital and non-hospital, in addition to claimant age and gender.

Description: The Society of Actuaries SoA developed this research project to repeat and expand upon its “Group Medical Insurance Large Claims Database Collection and Analysis” study, which was published as a monograph in August of 1997. The general purpose of these studies is to discover and analyze factors affecting claim incidence rates and the distribution of claim sizes. This is the report for the database. Description: The Canadian Institute of Actuaries (CIA) and Society of Actuaries (SOA) engaged RGA Reinsurance Company (RGA) to undertake a research project on level premium term life insurance products with a particular focus on the magnitude and impact of the “shock lapse” at the end of the level premium period. This project is similar to the SOA-sponsored research completed by RGA in 2014 for USA business.

Description: This paper, a study of Canadian life insurance company expenses, is regarded by the author, Arthur Pedoe, as a continuation of his earlier study presented to the Society of Actuaries in 1952 TSA IV, 485. In examining various expense trends the author emphasizes what he feels to be useful, namely an overall expense ratio defined as actual to expected total company expenses. The paper and ensuing discussion explore how expected expenses should be determined, as well as examining trends in group business expenses, among other topics. Description: This study of mortality on deferred Variable annuities over the period 1991-1995 was designed to test the adequacy of the 1994 MGDB Valuation Mortality Table to cover presumed extra mortality on Variable annuities VAs with Substantial Minimum Guaranteed Death Benefits MGDBs as compared with VAs with Minimal MGDBs. A parallel study of Fixed Annuity experience was carried out as a control. Expected deaths were computed also on the Annuity 2000 Table. The results raise questions as to its continuing safety as a valuation table for individual annuities. The study also shows that mortality levels on Qualified NonPension Trust business are significantly lower than on Nonqualified business.
