Several viable product styles are considered, along with the pros and cons of each.

Description: Presented at May 1996 Spring Meeting. Traditional reinsurers have become more conservative in recent years as the individual disability insurance industry continues to report poor financial results. Some reinsurers have exited the marketplace, while some others have raised rates, restricted certain coverages, tightened underwriting, and taken other actions to manage the risks. Thus, alternatives to traditional DI reinsurance are discussed.

Description: Disability insurers are showing an increasing interest in benefits that tie closely to long-term care. Several insurers have developed disability products that offer additional disability benefits based on the loss of activities of daily living, while others offer options to convert disability policies into long-term care policies.
