We first attempt to define creative thinking as opposed to procedural thinking or memory recall. We then describe concrete examples of actuarial projects that promote deeper thinking. We also address why creativity is needed and how to make sure our students are able to communicate their creative ideas effectively.

Description: The Society of Actuaries (SOA) Board of Directors voted at their June 11-12, 2022 meeting to approve a transition extension for certain Fellow of the SOA (FSA) candidates. The extension applies to Fellowship candidates who attained the ASA designation by July 1, 2018. These candidates are exempt from passing the Predictive Analytics exam if they complete all requirements for FSA (including the Fellowship Admissions Course) prior to the new deadline of January 1, 2024.

Entries showed a variety of strengths including smart use of tools, user-friendly dashboards, and displays paired with actuarial analysis that can lead an end-user through a process of discovery. In this webcast a data visualization expert will review the winning entries with the contestants. We'll discuss how the different strengths of these entries can be combined to create a powerful tool for communication and understanding.
